Introduction

Why are some regimes democratic while others are not? What explains differences in regime types across countries? These questions have perplexed philosophers and political scientists for centuries. Although this book does not pretend to answer such grand questions definitively, it does attempt to provide some clues as to the reasons for successful transitions to democracy by examining three case studies: Italy, Spain and Turkey.
