ABSTRACT

Since the 1990s, extended metropolitan regions in coastal China have developed rapidly and have become major centers of “place marketing” in China. These fast growing urban regions are now the focus of China’s attempts to develop a globally competitive economy that will enable China to achieve the status of a developed country by 2050. Grounding the analysis in theoretical frameworks introduced in Chapters 1 and 2 this case study investigates the urban transformation that is occurring in Shanghai’s urban margins, which in this case are the sub-urban rural counties under the jurisdiction of the city.
