ABSTRACT

A national team – in showjumping, soccer, tiddlywinks or whatever – usually consists of a varied bunch of people brought together from local teams across the country. They do some work together, but they still may hardly know each other. The saving grace, of course, is that their common purpose is very narrowly defined – within the next ninety minutes, get goals and prevent the other team from getting them. That’s enough to force eleven highly talented individuals to become a team.
