ABSTRACT

We all know about the brilliant team member who doesn’t play by the rules. Sometimes the leadership is tolerant of a person like that, believing that it’s just what the team needs, and that anyway it’s results that count. But when the maverick’s contemporaries and subordinates start to say, with increasing emphasis, that things have gone too far, then maybe it’s time for those in authority to take another look at what’s going on. This story is a classic illustration of what can go wrong when a highly able but anarchic middle leader is given too much rope. It’s much quoted in management circles for that reason.
