ABSTRACT

When I embarked on my leadership column in The Times Educational Supplement I wondered long and hard how to approach it. I knew I had useful things to say to people currently working in schools. Quite aside from my own long experience of teaching and headship, my many assignments for the TES and other journals and organisations have for years put me in continuous contact with education at every level, from the classroom and the head’s study to the government offices where policies were formed.
