ABSTRACT
A few months after I became a head, I asked the local authority advisory team to inspect our school. In the days before regular and frequent inspections, it was a good pre-emptive ploy, because it was then very possible to go for a very long time without ever being scrutinised from outside. Which was fine, except that when the inspectors did finally arrive, everyone may well have been in for a shock.
