ABSTRACT

A language defines a communication area. Most ordinary people live inserted into several communication networks of different widths, which can be organized through different languages. We can speak of “large” and “small” languages depending on the number of people involved. In current times, many individuals share a dual language system formed by some small local language and one or more large “linguas francas.” Only a minority of the current world’s inhabitants can make it by being monolingual.
