Introduction

Both China and India are rapidly industrializing states and ascending powers in international politics. The Indian Ocean itself and its sea-lines of communication (SLOCs) have become increasingly important for China over the decades and have always been important to India. Both countries now rely heavily on petroleum and natural resources to safely transit the Indian Ocean.
