ABSTRACT

We believe this indeterminacy should be seen as a positive thing. If there is one thing this collection of contributions tells us about recent developments in this area of research it is that the field has become more eclectic and varied,

reflecting our ability to see fear of crime as multi-faceted. What was once something of a taken-for-granted concept has been deconstructed, reconstructed and deconstructed again. It has been subject to critique from an array of different disciplinary fields and an array of ideological and epistemological positions within these. While it is clear that fear of crime is a problematic construct, many of the essays here have pointed to new and potentially fruitful areas of research which are both innovative and reflexive.
