ABSTRACT
We have begun to develop some conception of the attributes of the American cultural dialogue and its distribution throughout the various segments of our national population. Our discussions concerning the dialogue have all been based upon contemporary sources of data. This chapter is devoted to the interpretations of ob servers of America from before the Revolutionary War to the 1950s.
