ABSTRACT

We have tried to develop a coherent model of what we think of as the central dynamics of the American cultural dialogue, put it in some historical perspective and selectively describe some aspects of its transmission. In this chapter we will discuss an example of conflict and accommodation between minorities and the mainstream. We have chosen a Native American case because the forms of conflict and accommodation characteristic of mainstream/Native American relations, though extreme, will illuminate some features common to all. Further , this exercise will put mainstream value orientations and the dialogue surrounding them into sharper perspective.
