ABSTRACT

The origins of Romanesque architecture are in France in the late eighth and early ninth century when a re-germination of culture and architecture began under the influence of the French King Charlemagne and the great bishops and abbots of the Christian Church. They funded what was probably the greatest period of religious architectural development in the Western world, from Romanesque to Gothic over a period of some 600 years. Influenced by the Roman basilica plan with its long vistas and side aisles, the buildings of this time began to show the fundamental format for the great cathedrals of the medieval period.
