In Scotland, the Renaissance was evident in the numerous royal palaces which were built primarily under the influence of the Royal Stewarts, James IV and James V. Fawcett (1994: 301) states:

So far as secular architecture is concerned, the Middle Ages passed into the age of the Renaissance on a triumphant note with the construction of a series of royal residences … and in them we find a swaggering architectural expression of the claims of the Scottish monarchy to a role on the wider European stage.
