ABSTRACT

Those of you who are suffering from phobias or panic attacks may be apprehensive about the whole idea of seeking professional help. How do you set about it? How do you find the right clinic? What is involved in professional treatment? The answer to the first two questions is to approach your doctor and ask for a referral to the clinical psychology department of your local hospital or to a clinical psychologist in private practice. In answer to the last question, I hope that this book has helped you to begin to understand your difficulties at a deeper level as well as guiding you in the methods used to overcome or manage the phobic habits which tend to be seen as the main problem. In order to give you some idea of what is involved in professional treatment, I am including some clinical conversations composed from typical therapeutic sessions with men and women (aged 19-75) who have been referred for help with their problems. The names and personal details are fictitious.
