ABSTRACT

The science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke was once asked why he wrote so much about the future. His reply – ‘Because I’m going to spend the rest of my life there.’ How much more this applies to the children we teach, who will inherit not only the problems that previous generations have left behind, but must also address new challenges that the future will doubtless bring. With this in mind, giving children strategies for tackling problems of all kinds must surely be one of the fundamental aims of any educational system worthy of the name.
