ABSTRACT
The focus of this chapter will be the creative arts – the aspects highlighted in the area of learning and development known as creative development (DfES 2007). This does not mean that creativity is limited to the use of creative media or that only the arts are creative. Mathematics (and the sciences) involves a great deal of creative thinking. However, the creative arts do have a particular role to play in helping children and adults to symbolise their ideas. Like playing and talking, creative media offer another way of learning to think mathematically.
