ABSTRACT
Usually used to describe motivation, but may be used in other contexts where appropriate. Activity engaged in as a means to an end is ‘extrinsically’ motivated, but if engaged in for its own sake, because it is pleasurable or rewarding in its own right, is ‘intrinsically’ motivated. The first is typical of much paid work, the latter of playing a musical instrument or sport without any other reward.
