ABSTRACT

Speech disorder resulting from brain damage to either Broca’s area or Wernicke’s area. Broca’s aphasia is marked by difficulties in speaking, articulation, word ordering and access to words (depending on the exact nature of the damage). Wernicke’s aphasia, by contrast, involves problems with comprehension, spoken word recognition and word meanings. Not all speech disorders are considered as aphasia since they may also result from deafness and other forms of neurological damage.
