ABSTRACT

People with an eating disorder often find it difficult to manage and regulate emotions. They may try to avoid feeling, thinking about and acknowledging emotions, and sometimes act as if showing or talking about difficult emotions – such as hurt, anger and sorrow – is unacceptable. They may be unable to react verbally and actively at the appropriate time, to the appropriate person, and at the appropriate level. In other words, they may have perfected the art of avoidance. At other times their emotional output may be intense and extreme.
