ABSTRACT

In September 2012, a Google search of the term “Lady Gaga” generated over 600 million results, covering the pop star’s music (15 million albums sold so far), her awards (five Grammies), her tours, her success (she is on the Forbes Most Powerful Women list), and her outrageous style. But the second entry on Google that month was titled “Lady Gaga gains 25 pounds and is on a diet; does she need to lose weight?” Countless other stories that month discussed the details of Gaga’s apparent weight gain, complete with unflattering photos of the star.
