ABSTRACT
To understand fully Angkor’s situation today some initial scene setting is required. Accordingly, the following chapter traces an assemblage of material and nonmaterial processes – including nation building, commerce and branding, tourism, and civic arts – to reveal the ways in which Angkor has been appropriated, commodified, secularized and symbolically exchanged over the last 140 years.
