ABSTRACT

Not all learning takes place within a higher education institution. Some of this learning may be facilitated by a lecturer, for example, through directed fieldwork, but it should be recognised that the students themselves will have a large degree of control over many aspects of their own learning, for example, through conducting research using academic texts and journals (see below). Also, the direction of the learning could be facilitated by other agencies, such as during work-based or placement learning. Whatever form this learning takes, we must acknowledge that it is an important aspect of the students’ overall experience of higher education.
