ABSTRACT

Bivariate analysis includes a large number of different methods. This chapter concentrates on the main approaches to bivariate analysis of nominal and ordinal variables. This chapter:

Q focuses on variables with relatively few categories

Q explores tabular, graphical and statistical techniques

Q distinguishes between techniques designed for descriptive analysis and those used for inferential purposes

Q aims to provide an overview of the range of methods of bivariate analysis and a framework for selecting the most appropriate method

Q concentrates on the logic of various approaches and on interpretation of statistical results rather than on computation

Q leaves the analysis of interval-level variables to the next chapter.
