ABSTRACT

Partnership, whether it be between the public and private sector, the public and public sector, or other combinations, is the buzz word in many aspects of contemporary society. The partnership approach is seen as the most effective way of working in a wide range of settings as it has at its heart the notion of shared responsibility, accountability and in a practical sense, shared knowhow in the implementation of strategies and projects. This chapter examines the concept of partnership particularly in urban regeneration in the UK and France and seeks to demonstrate how two countries, each with their own legal, administrative and cultural traditions are developing the partnership approach and how the different backgrounds are leading to particular approaches.
