ABSTRACT

So far we have focused our attention on how the mass media represents crime, criminals and victims of crime. In this chapter, we look at recent developments in the media and the impact they have had on crime and the reporting of it. In particular, we will consider how new forms of electronic media have altered the relationship between the media, crime and justice. As regards this last comment, it is clear that the Internet has become an integral part of social and business activity over the last two decades. The educational, fi nancial and social benefi ts of the Internet cannot be underestimated; however, its proliferation has also raised concerns about the potential for criminal opportunities.
