By the early twentieth century, the United States had become the predominant boxing jurisdiction. To a very large extent, and certainly in terms of revenue, boxing was now an American sport. Sammons observes that the First World War had a ‘remarkable, salutary’ effect on boxing in the US, with former pugilists playing a central role in the physical training of the US army.1
