ABSTRACT

Leadership takes place at all levels within a school or college. From students leading their own learning through ICT to support staff introducing a new administrative software package, the most effective schools look to nurture leadership opportunities for everyone. Nevertheless, schools and colleges are highly structured organisations with a wide variety of middle and senior leadership and management opportunities. Any teacher who has held a leadership or management position will possess a wide range of skills, and has a number of different job options beyond the school or college setting. If you do not have a clear idea of the direction you want to follow, it can be useful to analyse what makes a leader, what makes a manager and the various positions within the wider field of education that might suit your particular skills, interests and experience.
