ABSTRACT

Not so long ago, Jenni was working with a mother living in temporary accommodation. As a refugee in a new country, the mother was unsure how she was going to provide for her children once she moved into a more permanent accommodation. She wanted to work but felt she had little education and few employable skills. Jenni asked her, if she could dream of a life with no barriers in her way, what job she would choose to do. Her reply was child care. Jenni smiled and looked at the mother’s two healthy children playing nearby, and together they started writing down what she did well as a mother. It was not long before they had a long list of skills she could bring to a job in child care. The mother left that day imagining new possibilities for her future.
