ABSTRACT

The focus of this chapter is upon the principles which underpin sound approaches to curriculum planning. It does not deal with the actual content of the whole curriculum which is a matter for individual schools to determine in the light of their particular circumstances, the age and ability range of the pupils, the policies of the local education authority (LEA) and the requirements of national legislation. Although there is still room for much debate about desirable curriculum content, the requirements to deliver a curriculum which has ‘breadth and balance’ and which is relevant to the pupils’ needs are well established.
