ABSTRACT

Competitive field sports incorporate intermittent high-intensity bouts of activity that may have to be repeated many times during the course of a match with little recovery time between efforts. The demands vary depending on the strength of the opposition, the level of competition, the course of the game and the sport concerned. These patterns apply to the outside sports such as field-hockey, the various football codes, the Gaelic sports of football and hurling and other invasive team games such as lacrosse. They also apply to indoor games such as futsal and to indoor court games such as basketball and netball.
