ABSTRACT

In planning this work, the decision was taken, after some consideration, to deal with the specific situation relating to children within a dedicated chapter, which largely mirrors the structure of the book. This not only allows for a fuller discussion but also provides an easy reference for those specifically interested in the subject of homeless children. Any discussion of children’s homelessness in developing countries automatically suggests to the reader the emotive and visible subject of ‘street children’. However, despite what Rizzini (1996: 226) calls a ‘prodigious outpouring of texts’ on the phenomenon of street children, there is need for clarification when writing about children in the context of homelessness.
