ABSTRACT

Restorative practice offers tools for healing and restoring relationships damaged by hurtful behavior. It creates a framework for honest and respectful dialogue between a parent and teen. The restorative process engages youth in thinking through the impact of their behavior on others and how to take responsibility for harm they have caused. Through reparative acts, teens understand the true meaning of accountability for behavior. They learn skills to build personal competency and make a plan to prevent hurting others again. Restorative practice fosters understanding, compassion, and empathy and moves the parent-teen relationship forward in a new way.
