ABSTRACT
In the beginning there was news: the journalism of reportage and correspondence about events going on in the world sent back in handwritten letters from far-off places to readers among the political, business and military elites of post-medieval Europe. The function of early journalism was primarily that of environmental surveillance, providing those in need of it with a window on what was going on in the world beyond their castle walls and city gates.
