ABSTRACT

When a newspaper proprietor appears to give something away, there must be a catch. The current manifestation of this largesse is DVDs, posters and books (the last being a very old form of giveaway – the Express was doing it in the inter-war years of the last century), but before this upsurge in blatantly promotional gifts there was the supplement. Newspaper supplements range from the traditional but now almost defunct sports extra produced at breakneck speed and smudgily printed on green or pink newsprint, right through to beautifully designed colour supplements printed by photogravure on art paper (or a close relative).
