ABSTRACT

Why does page layout and design matter in a newspaper? After all, we buy newspapers to read articles, check sports results or do the crossword. If we want to admire fine design, we’ll go to a museum. Not many of us will turn to our friend or colleague on the bus or train, or to our partner on the sofa, and ask: ‘Have you seen the way this page is designed?’ Rather, the question will be ‘How did United manage to lose that?’ or ‘Have you worked out the anagram in 16 down?’
