ABSTRACT

Mentioning the term ‘headlines’ is invariably a cue for those infamous examples from the tabloids, usually the Sun: ‘Gotcha’, ‘Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster’… ‘Paddy Pantsdown’.Here, the headline is remembered long after the details of the original story (in Starr’s case, a concoction) are forgotten. Or occasionally the unintentional: ‘Drunk gets nine months in violin case’, where the headline’s construction is at fault.
