ABSTRACT

Of course, real life is often far less straightforward than any list of symptoms might suggest. Inevitably there will be overlaps between different conditions, and developing one condition can lead to an increased risk of developing another. An example is someone struggling with depression, but who has relied on alcohol to lift their mood. When one condition exists alongside another, they are described as being `co-morbid'. This can make treatment more complicated, and will be discussed in more detail in Part IV. For now, it is important to appreciate that when one problem exists alongside another, it can often be dif®cult to disentangle them and to ®nd the best place to start.
