ABSTRACT

Michael Argyle’s contribution to psychology has been essentially pioneering. He has opened up new fields of research and made valuable contributions within them. In so doing, he has stimulated the interest of others who have become the settlers in the field. Their task has been to refine, to qualify, redefine and make new distinctions, by which time Michael has usually moved on. This is the contribution of an original thinker. A generation of psychologists has every reason to be grateful for his contribution and social psychology in the UK has to acknowledge his role as a founding father and elder statesman.
