ABSTRACT

Some jobs are less desirable than others. But there is no simple rank order, with the same jobs at the bottom regardless of the measure one takes. If that were so, each unpleasant aspect of the job would contribute in the same way. Making that assumption I assessed a number of jobs in a National Health Service laundry, and gave ‘stress points’ for each feature that seemed undesirable (Broadbent, 1981). The total number of points correlated significantly with the number of clinical symptoms of anxiety or depression.
