ABSTRACT

As the title of this chapter indicates, I see the challenging behaviours produced by people with very severe learning difficulties as an appropriate (in personal terms) response to the forces which are affecting them in their lives. We usually greatly desire to help the person to behave differently, but I would suggest that this stance of understanding, of viewing the behaviours that the person produces as a natural, normal response, is the best starting point in terms of the attitudes we carry with us in our everyday work.
