ABSTRACT

Technique is defined in general terms as the ‘way of doing’ and the technique used in the performance of a specific sports skill can be defined as the way in which that sports skill is performed. Technique can be analysed using biomechanical methods and the ‘biomechanical analysis of technique’ is a specific aspect of performance analysis and undertaken using qualitative, quantitative and predictive methods. This chapter is concerned with the qualitative biomechanical analysis of technique (or technique analysis for short) as this is descriptive, based on observation, usually with the aid of video recordings, but with no measurements made. In teaching or coaching, qualitative biomechanical analysis can provide the learner with detailed feedback to improve performance.
