ABSTRACT
Chapter 2 discussed the eclectic nature of Congress ideology, and the relationship between the party structures and those of the Indian state as set out in the 1950 Constitution. A majority of these structures dated back to the early part of the twentieth century, and although clearly colonial in origin, the large degree of overlap between the 1950 Indian Constitution and the Government of India Act 1935 reflected both the familiarity of India’s political elites with this particular format of governmentality as well as a continuity of concerns: a fear of instability and chaos resulting from the onset of independence, of insurrection and territorial disintegration.
