ABSTRACT

Food programmes appear regularly on television and are increasingly popular but many people know surprisingly little about food. Food technology can make an important contribution to pupils’ learning in Design and Technology as it allows them to learn and develop knowledge and skills using ‘materials and components’ with which they are familiar. The National Curriculum (DfEE/QCA 1999) identifies that the importance of Design and Technology rests on the belief that it allows pupils to ‘think and intervene creatively to improve quality of life’, to ‘look for needs, wants and opportunities and respond to them’ and to ‘combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetics, social and environmental issues, function and industrial practices’ – all of these can be achieved through the medium of food.
