ABSTRACT

At this endpoint in the book, the easiest concluding option to follow would be to give a round-up of the major attractions of the subcontinent, a little summary of each chapter’s findings and wish everyone ‘buen viaje’ in their travels. We could conclude, as does an editorial piece in Roughnews, the magazine for users of the Rough Guides, that:

the continent is attracting increasing numbers of travellers; for despite relatively high air fares, most of the continent is cheap, its politics largely stable and more or less democratic, landscapes spectacular and cultures relatively accessible, whatever your budget. So far, too, South America has largely avoided being sucked into the vortex of the so-called war on terrorism. Long may that continue.1
