ABSTRACT
Since the Yangzi delta maintained the nation’s highest tenancy rate as well as the nation’s highest absentee landlord rate, and since intense conflicts between absentee landlords and tenant-peasants here found no parallel elsewhere in the country, we might expect that this area would be a fertile ground for the rural revolution advocated by the Chinese Communists. Paradoxically, this was not the case.
