ABSTRACT

The importance of language and communication can be demonstrated in all aspects of teaching and learning and, in recent years, with the introduction of new curriculum guidelines across the UK, schools have increased the emphasis on speaking and listening. The focus in this chapter is a group of children in a special school, where the teacher and the speech and language therapist had discussed the importance of raising the profile of language and vocabulary in a more specific way in all subjects. In this case, music lessons provide the context for a range of language and communication targets. The chapter also demonstrates how communication between staff was improved by developing better planning and recording sheets which were accessible to all of the practitioners involved.
