ABSTRACT

Back in 1942, when he first shared the history and cultural materials of the

Kaifeng Jewish community with the English-speaking world, Bishop Wil-

liam Charles White noted:

No attempt has been made to interpret the religious or moral phi-

losophical ideas of the Chinese Jews, or the permeation and influence

of Chinese non-Jewish ideas upon their beliefs, as may be revealed

in these inscriptions. Such a study would require considerable time,

and would bring this monograph to undue dimensions. As a matter

of fact, a Part IV, PHILOSOPHICAL, would be necessary to deal

adequately with this subject.1
