ABSTRACT

The literacy hour is the pivot around which the NLS is structured and the major focus for teaching reading and writing. However, it is important to consider the time lapse between what is taught and what is eventually learned, mastered and secured: remember the time-honoured message of Vygotsky that what a child can do with help today, he will do independently tomorrow.
