ABSTRACT

Language is both caught and taught. Immersing children in a rich and creative language and communication environment is not enough for all of them; learners with underdeveloped language need focused activities with adults and peers as part of a planned programme. Previous chapters have explored language and communication through other areas of learning, e.g. through the literacy and numeracy hours, and across the curriculum. This chapter considers how speaking and listening in their own right are developed through focused activities matched to group or individual learning targets.
