ABSTRACT

The transnationalization of communications has almost completely shattered the cultural defenses [sic] of developing nations. The very existence of indigenous cultures is threatened with massive modifications as Western culture is presented as the culture which every modernizing state must emulate. Aspects of indigenous culture are preserved in bastardized, “touristic form” to attract dollars while the local population consumes popular Western cultural fare or local films, TV, radio, and comics which ape the styles, techniques and content of Western cultural products. The incursion of Western informational and cultural commodities is constant and widespread. They are also technologically superior, therefore admired and enjoyed.
